Cooling down in the Donnersbachklamm gorge
The Donnersbachklamm is also great fun for children. It’s close to Haus Erna, yet surprisingly … . Waterfalls, bridges, swirling water … you’ll find it all in the Donnersbachklamm. This activity takes about 2 hours. With children, it may take a little longer. There is also the option to extend this activity by a couple of hours.
We start at Gasthof Leitner in Donnersbach. Gasthof Leitner is a 15-minute drive from Haus Erna. That’s also where we park our car. From here, we follow the Klammrundweg. Along the way, we pass, amongst other things: the Donnersbacher Holzknecht Hütte (a replica woodcutter’s hut), several waterfalls, a number of small bridges, the Klammsteigruhe and the Felsentunnel, a bench offering a lovely view of the surroundings (once we’ve emerged from the gorge). For those interested, there are regular information boards along the way providing further explanation and insight into the sights.
The Donnersbachklamm: a great activity for children. Definitely do. On a hot summer’s day, the Donnersbachklamm is a lovely place to cool off.
Another interesting fact: since 1991, the Donnersbachklamm has been designated a natural monument (Naturdenkmäler) in Styria.
After the walk, you can have something to eat or drink at the Leitnerhof. Definitely recommended as far as we are concerned.

Sports enthusiasts can choose to follow the Wasserschlossrundweg (path 2) halfway along the route. This will add an extra 2 hours to the walk. We haven’t done this extension of the walk ourselves yet.
